“APP ST @ UT”

1st Quarter

KO:         UT kicker only kicks it 2 yds deep into endzone; coverage keeps App St within 20yd line

DEF
14:55

1-10:        RT & MLB make a tackle for loss on a running play
                     HOLDING PENALTY (App St)
2-21:        R Safety and R Corner bump into each other; R-OLB gets cut blocked; Safety makes tackle on RB way to far down field
3-9:                 DELAY PENALTY (App St)
3-14:        #13 Slot Corner fights off 2 App St blockers to disrupt swing pass; MLB finishes off the tackle as the RB swing pass is his responsibility
4-14:        Sutton fumbles a punt return; should have called fair catch
1-10:        Incomplete pass
2-10:        Right MLB has no clue where the ball is and shoots the gap blindly; Left MLB guesses the wrong gap; Secondary has to make tackle downfield on the RB
1-10:        Unblocked Right DE scrapes down to make a tackle on RB
2-10:        All 3 LB’s get blocked along with front 4; Free Safety is confused on the motion; Left Corner and Free Safety make tackle on RB way too far downfield
1-G:         #22 Free Safety missed a tackle; MLB more concerned with engaging the blocker than finding the ball and making a tackle
                       TD + XPT (App St)

KO:         App St kicker kicks it out of the endzone

OFF
10:56

1-10:        Left DE fights off Right Tackle who decides to chip on LB instead of staying w/Left DE who makes tackle on RB for a short gain
2-8:          Great TE seam route for a pass/catch for a 1st down
1-10:        Hurry up play with RB up middle; all of OL blocks well
2-4:         RB out route/pass/catch all executed for a 1st down
1-10:        Pulling Right Guard misses his block; run for no gain
2-10:        Hitch route for a pass/catch; lot of cushion from DB
1-10:        Center and Right Tackle block the same defender leaving Right DE free to make tackle on QB
2-7:          QB overthrows receiver
3-7:          Deep out route to WR; good pass protection; too much cushion by App St
1-10:        QB bad decision to throw into coverage downfield; RB was open in the flat on a screen
2-10:        OK blocking by OL except for Right Tackle not staying with Left DE; RB just outruns everyone to the outside for a 1st Down
1-G:         Right Tackle does not stay with his block and Left DT makes tackle
2-G:         Left Tackle misses his block on Left OLB
3-G:        WR doesn’t maintain control of ball all the way through the catch; QB should have thrown to wide open RB
4-G:                  23 yd Field Goal is good (UT)

KO:         Kicker only kicks it to 4yd line but great tackling to keep within the 15yd line

DEF
6:08

1-10:        Lot of bad things for UT defense...
                                a. Left DT gets obliterated so badly he obstructs MLB’s ability to make a read
                                b. Left DE loses outside contain
                                c. Left Corner gets blocked by TE
                                d. Left OLB shoots gap, misses tackle, gets blocked, trails play but misses tackle again
                                e. Right OLB over runs RB and misses tackle
                                f. After Left DT totally screws up MLB, MLB actually makes the tackle downfield
1-10:        Great 1v1 tackle by Slot Corner on WR pitch play for loss
2-11:        Great Left DE pass rush to force QB to make bad throw
3-11:        Another great pass rush to force QB to make bad throw
4-11:        Punt Return, very little return yds

OFF
4:25

1-10:        QB keeper but he could not outrun Left DE
2-6:         Bubble screen goes nowhere
3-6:         Bad decision by QB to pass to out route as the outside receiver was open on the longer fly route; Pass Interference was not called as defender clearly had his right hand on #6 receiver’s back before ball arrived

4-6:        Punt resulted in a “targeting” call which was legit; Returner interference should not have been called as Maybin was at least 1 yard away when ball was caught

DEF
3:09

1-10:        Slot Corner releases motion WR to Free Safety and FS makes a great tackle for no gain on the reverse pitch
2-10:        Great Left DE rush and RB/QB collide on handoff for loss
3-14:        Screen was open as no LB’s had RB responsibility covered, but incomplete pass
4-14:        Punt Return; fair catch

OFF
1:35

1-10:        Another dangerous hitch route for a 5yd gain
2-5:         All the OL get blocks, Center chip blocks on Left OLB but unblocked Right OLB makes a shoestring tackle after a gain for 1st Down
1-10:        Center misses easy block on NT who gets pressure on QB; Left Guard lets his Defensive Right Tackle blow by him; would have liked to see QB dump the ball off to RB as an outlet as he was scrambling due to pressure
2-18:        Right Guard lets Left DT blow by him and RB does just enough to let QB scramble and complete pass to WR who has his foot out of bounds for anincomplete pass
3-18:        Center misses easy block on NT who gets pressure on QB; incomplete pass to RB

2nd Quarter

4-18:        Punt; fair catch

DEF
14:53

1-10: Left DT gets turned around = poor effort, Right DT allows the cut block to push him back 2yds and he takes bad angle on RB who goes by him, Right DE scrapes down the play but rather than pushing up he drifts back and allows himself to get blocked by TE but Right DE still makes the tackle 6 yds downfield, Right DE penetrates at a slant angle inside but over runs the RB and takes himself out of the play, Left OLB blitzes the outside gap and has a shot at the RB who runs out of his poor arm tackle, Strong Safety blitz gets picked up by FB, MLB covers for blitzing SS and is out of the play, Right OLB fights off a poor block by OL and makes tackle on RB along with an unblocked Right Corner, I never saw what the FS did
2-4: Right Corner gets blocked by TE, Right DE gets blocked by Left OT, Right OLB gets slightly blocked by Right OG but still makes the tackle after a 1st down is gained, MLB gets blocked by Center and is too late to make the tackle on a run to the outside left.

1-10: Right OLB has no clue where the ball is, Right DE gets sucked in and misses the end around by the receiver, the Slot Corner releases the motion man to the FS as he should, FS is too late picking up the end around, Right Corner rather than engaging the end around WR decides to run backwards and give up ground
2-1: Right DE fights off his block to make end around tackle, Right Corner avoids Upback blocker and makes the end around tackle but WR end around gains a 1st down

1-10: Offensive Left Guard falls down as he was trying to block Right OLB who goes unblocked and Right OLB has the only shot on the RB run up the middle but makes a bad tackle as RB runs out of his arms, Left DE Left DT and Right DT all do their jobs by getting some penetration, MLB guesses wrong gap and gets blocked, Left OLB is too far from the play to make a difference due to alignment, Right Corner and Free Safety do nothing
2-4: Right corner in man to man gets run off by WR, FS SS and Left Corner are too far aligned out of the play, Left DE and Right OLB are also too far aligned out of the play, Left DT Right DT and Right DE just push back on their blockers and make no effort to find the ball, MLB fights off Upback blocker and makes tackle along with unblocked Left OLB
3-1: Right DE gets double teamed, Right DT and Left DT don’t really make a great pass rush in 1v1 blocking, Right DE gets the most meaningful pass rush, Left Corner releases motion WR but doesn’t pay attention to RB out of the backfield as an outlet, Right OLB finds the crossing route of the motion WR and times his hit right when the pass gets there to break up the play causing 4th down after an incomplete pass
4-1: Man to Man with Corners on outside, Free Safety over the top, Right OLB gets blocked, MLB is responsible for RB out of the backfield on a short pass that gains 2 yds and a first down…MLB just couldn’t get there in time but really more of a good play call than bad defense, Left OLB went with the other RB which was his responsibility

1-10: Both DT’s stuff the play and MLB fights off block to stuff play too and makes tackle on RB up the middle but extensive pushing by OL and RB gets more yards than where original contact occurred
2-5: Unblocked MLB makes great tackle on RB run up the middle
3-2: Right DT fights off double team and runs into the QB who is ball carrier but Right DT has no clue QB has the ball, Left DE does what he should and that is to scrape down but runs into the “no clue” Left DT and gets blocked by his own man, Right DT and Right DE both get blocked and taken out of play, Right MLB gets blocked and pushed way back out the play, Left MLB gets blocked but fights off his blocker and makes tackle only after 1st down

1-10: Play action pass, Right Corner 1v1 with TE, Left Corner 1v1 with Outside WR, Left Slot Corner blitzes and MLB covers Slot Receiver 1v1, Free Safety is free, Left OLB does a twist stunt to rush up the middle, Right OLB is in zone coverage (reading his RB key who never releases), that leaves Right DE matched up 1v1 with Tailback who makes a catch over the Right DE in coverage and scores a TD.  Even Jesse Palmer (announcer) mistakenly thinks it was a LB covering the TB, App St exploited a weakness in UT’s pass coverage by isolating a TB mismatched with a DE…bad coaching and poor execution by the Right DE in coverage although I can’t really blame a DE for trying to cover a TB
                                                TD, missed XPT  (App St)
KO:         App St kicker kicks it out of the endzone

OFF
8:53

1-10: RB gets great blocking by OL but for whatever reason decides to bury his head into the back of the pulling LG instead of running off his right side to daylight…it basically tells me Hurd is more of a tunnel vision runner and would rather give up on a play and go straight ahead no matter what then using his vision to see what’s open around him, but he still picks up 8yd in spite of his bad decision making with great OL run blocking on this play
2-10: Run by RB off the right side, the Slot WR totally misses his block against the Left OLB who makes the tackle for a short gain but a 1st down
1-10: Right and Left Tackles don’t block anyone on this running play where the RB slips by himself in the backfield but manages to pick up a few yards on his own, Center misses his first block but manages to cut the MLB downfield
2-8: Right Tackle just lowers a shoulder into his blocker for a brief second, Right Guard does just enough to disrupt the NT, Center tries to get to MLB but can’t hold him off and MLB makes the tackle on RB along with one of the 2 deep unblocked Safeties, Left Guard and Left Tackle both do an excellent job of blocking their responsibilities
3-3: Quick hitch route and good blocking and good throw by QB to RB (split out like a WR) gives UT a 1st down on a 4yd pass and catch play
1-10: Right DT makes the lead tackle on a QB keeper, Left DE had the RB covered on a possible handoff so as to make QB keep the ball, the reason the Right DT was available to make the tackle is that the Center missed his block
2-11: Right Tackle doesn’t block anyone and leaves the Left DE available to scrape down the line to make the tackle on the RB, Right Guard doesn’t stay with his block which forces the RB back to the right where the Left DE is waiting for him, Center misses his block, Left Tackle and Left Guard do just enough on their blocks to keep their defenders from engaging the RB
3-11: Center and Left Guard don’t block anyone and Right Guard falls down while trying to block a LB (so Right guard doesn’t block anyone either), all of that helps App St get a great pass rush on QB who scrambles to his right and throws to a wide open Left Flanker dragging to the right side of the play about 4 yards from line of scrimmage, but a penalty was called on UT for the Right Tackle who held the DE as QB was scrambling
                                         HOLDING PENALTY (UT)
3-21: RB screen play, inside WR misses his block who misses the tackle on the RB but does enough to slow him down in order for the safeties to come up and make the tackle well short of the 1st Down
4-15: Punt and fair catch at App St 8yd line
DEF
4:35

1-10: Right Safety & Right Corner are unblocked and come up to make the tackle on a RB run to the left
2-5: Right DE does a twist stunt and shoots up the middle and makes tackle on RB on a run to the left
3-4: Left DE goes unblocked and rushes QB as he throws right over him to RB for a screen pass, but Left DT was just right there to make tackle as he was getting blocked
4-6: Punt and fair catch at UT 49yd line
OFF
2:57

1-10: On a 3 man pass rush by App St, the Right Tackle blocks no one, the TE and RB cannot block their 1 Def Lineman who pressures QB, Left Guard, Center, Right Guard and Right Tackle all do a decent job of blocking 2 Defensive Linemen, great “almost” catch by inside Slot WR on a low thrown ball by QB actually hits the ground after replay
2-10: Left Tackle seals off Right OLB, Left Guard blocks no one, Center gets a great block as does Right Guard who pulls to the left, Right Tackle also gets a good block, Upback misses his block on inside LB who makes tackle
3-5: OL gets great pass blocking and QB throws a great pass to the inside Slot WR on a 10yd curl route for a 1st down
1-10: Left Tackle misses his block on Right DE and just falls down and Right DE makes tackle on RB, none of the rest of the OL actually stay with their block for more than half a second and all DL were ready to stop the RB if need be
2-10: Quick hitch route to pick up 7yds on the quick pass by QB
3-3: All out blitz by App St gets QB flushed out of pocket and makes bad decision to just throw it up for grabs and App St gets an interception
DEF
1:24

1-10: Front 7 all do their jobs and stuff the run up the middle for 2yd gain
2-8: Right DT on an outside twist stunt darts in the backfield making the first contact on RB for a gain of only 1yd as the clock expires for the 1st half…on the play, there were actually 8 men on the line of scrimmage and there was no penalty called (there is a Tailback behind the QB not seen in picture)

Uhh...ok?

So I think we get screwed here by going to Atlanta.

First, Tampa wants a 3-5 conference record (#40 in CBS poll) Auburn instead of a 4-4 conference record (#38 in CBS poll) Tennessee. Fine. Auburn beat us so I guess I can see that. But what is weird is that the way the SEC is set up now with 2 teams in BCS bowls, that means Tennessee and Auburn are playing against an AP #12 ranked Va Tech and an AP unranked Northwestern, respectively. Now CBS has Northwestern as #16 but still, if Tennessee gets a lesser bowl (2008 numbers...$2.4 million to SEC team in Atlanta vs $3 million to SEC team in Tampa not to mention Vols play New Year's Eve and not New Year's Day), why do the Vols have to play, some would argue, a touger opponent in Virginia Tech than Northwestern?

However, with all that said, I'm just happy to be complaining about which team we play and in which bowl we play. Because last year at this time...well let's not talk about last year ;)

The plus sides are that weather will not be a factor and Atlanta is closer to Knoxville than Tampa.

Bowl Predictions Redone

First, great game for the Vols against KY. If Stocker hangs on to the ball, it wouldn't have gone to overtime...but we won and that's all that matters.

Ok, so Ole Miss, Georgia and South Carolina screwed me up a bit. Here are my predictions with Florida and Alabama not changing since last post.

LSU 9-3 5-3 goes to Capital One (Orlando)
Tennessee 7-5 4-4 goes to Outback (Tampa)
Ole Miss 8-4 4-4 goes to Cotton (Dallas)
Georgia 7-5 4-4 goes to Peach (Atlanta)
S. Carolina 7-5 3-5 goes to Music City (Nashville)
Arkansas 7-5 3-5 goes to Liberty (Memphis)
Auburn 7-5 3-5 goes to Papa John's (Birmingham)
Kentucky 7-5 3-5 goes to Independence (Shreveport)

Tennessee gets a bump up to Outback by finishing 2nd in the East but have to travel a little further than Nashville or Atlanta. But I don't think the Vol faithful will mind a trip to Florida in January.

Regular Season Final Predictions & Bowl Bids

Florida beats FSU and Alabama beats Auburn and Florida goes to the BCS championship after beating Alabama in the SEC championship for the 2nd straight year. But Florida loses to Texas. Alabama plays as an at-large bid in the Sugar Bowl, again.

Ole Miss beats MSU and goes to Capital One (Orlando) at 9-3
LSU beats ARK and goes to Outback (Tampa) at 9-3
ARK loses to LSU and goes to Cotton (Dallas) at 7-5
TEN beat KY and goes to Peach (Atlanta) at 7-5
KY loses to TEN and goes to Music City (Nashville) at 7-5
UGA loses to GA Tech and goes to Liberty (Memphis) at 6-6
AUB loses to ALA and goes to Papa John's (Birmingham) at 7-5
USC loses to CLEM and goes to Independence (Shreveport) at 6-6

As my friend Evil says, "Book it."

"D"-pleted

Seems like most of the Vols defense was hurt either going into or coming out of the Vandy game. If we don't turn the ball over, I see us beating Kentucky at Lexington (even with a battered defense) to go 7-5 for the regular season.

GO VOLS!!!

Rebel Whipping

The Vols got their tails handed to 'em by the Rebels. Outplayed on both sides of the ball. OL and DL were being pushed around. McCluster ran away from Berry's side most of the time and when he did run to Berry's side, the Rebels had a lineman and maybe even another guy blocking him. That left Rogan, Thompson and the rest of the Vol's defense trying to tackle McCluster who goes 95mph when the rest of the guys on the field are going about 70mph. Offensively, we had a few key drops and some bad routes/passes and never could hit Jones for the long one. Hardesty was inconsistent due to our OL not winning up front. Don't even get me started on special teams. Basically, we looked bad.

We need to right the ship in a hurry against a struggling Vanderbilt to become bowl eligible and then we can top off the cake with some orange icing at Kentucky two days after Thanksgiving. 7-5 is a lot better than 5-7 from a year ago.

Let's all get behind the Vol seniors this weekend and hope for a big thrashing of the Commodores.

GO VOLS!!!
